Ran muttered an, "I wouldn't trust me either." Reg just looked a little annoyed, but nodded. It was hard to remain mad at someone who was obviously hurting horribly.
The poor bastard.

Glyph peered over the bricks, just enough that her yellow eyes appeared over the edge of the rooftop. Normally the thought of eavesdropping on two complete strangers would be appalling to her, but something was interesting about this drama...
There was only one problem...
"What are they saying down there?"
Impatiently, Vesper scowled at her, catching her lip-talking out of the corner of his eye. Well, at least she had enough sense to stay silent; had it been Gale, the whole tri-state area would have known they were up on that roof, invisible or not.
Of course, he could hear every word from the trio perfectly, but, nervously, he put a finger to his lips anyway, quietly shushing the hedgehog. They were almost invisibly tucked away in their little alcove, hidden in his shadows, but it wasn't as if he believed that would do much; the people around these parts had an uncanny way of noticing when the tiniest things were out of place. It scared him, actually, and he began to regret how easily Glyph had talked him into following these poor people.
"Stay back." He mouthed, and Glyph complied instantly when she saw how badly her friend was shivering. Nodding weakly, the bat trained his eyes back on the three, bristling at their conversation.
Oh Gods, what was all this talk of demons? He didn't like it--he didn't like it at all.
... What would he do if they were found out now?

"Excuse me."
A youthful, curious voice sounded from the darkness directly above Vesper's head. A figure hung from the fire escape above the pair. The night's thick shadows obscured most of his form, but if one squinted, one could make out the tips of golden hair dangling over his shoulders; his one free, hanging arm sleeved in a green turtleneck; the hems of black slacks; and a bare, impossibly pale, human foot latched casually on to the cold metal poles.
"Are you two spying?"

To Vesper, the quiet inquiry was like thunder in his ear, rattling his heart to a painful halt. On instinct, he scrambled back, skidding and slipping on the gravel in a tangled mess of limbs and wings; the only thing that kept him from taking a nose dive off the side of the building was Glyph, and she wasn't too happy about it...
"HEY!" Hissing, the hedgehog scrabbled out from under the trembling bat, only to freeze at the absolutely shocked expression lighting up his face. Nervously, she followed his line of sight upward, past the next floor to...
There was a freaking human. Hanging. From. The fire escape.
For a moment, the only thing she could think to do was stare; then Vesper groaned quietly and flopped onto his back, pinching his nose. Glyph blinked.
"Well, we were," she replied dumbly, before jerking a thumb in the bat's direction. "But now I think he's just having a heart attack, the slacker..."

A gasp sounded from the shadow-swathed form. "Oh my goodness! I'm so sorry!"
The newcomer dropped from the fire escape and landed on the lower rooftop with an easy, catlike grace, his bare feet giving off a light pamf.
The speaker stepped forward, into the soft glow of the streetlamps' light. Shadows slipped away to reveal a young teenager, short and compact for his age, and with a such a barefaced, open countenence as to make the youth look even younger than he was. Only his voice, a more robust tenor than a boy would possess, marked him at sixteen.
"I didn't mean to scare you!" he fretted, extending his hands in a helpless gesture as he took a step towards the fallen hedgehog and the twitching heap of bat. "I just--I saw you following those demons and that girl out of the club, and I didn't think it was a good idea...I mean...demon afairs are best left alone, you know?" He tried a rueful grin, but it didn't mix well with the painful worry spilling out of his eyes.
When he took another step forward, the moon hit his face, giving the two Mobians a much better view. The youth's eyes were a burnished gold, a tawny that matched his unruly, shoulder-length tresses in hue. The oddest thing about his face, however, was a quality to his eyes: they seemed to have no pupil. Eyes like that on most people would have been sightless, but the boy seemed anything but blind, his expression crinkled with worry as he looked back and forth between Vesper and Glyph.
"Is he really having a heart attack?" Will's voice nearly squeaked with a sudden flare of panic. "Is there anything I can do to help?"

"N-nah. He'll be fine." Shaken, she cast a quick glance (perhaps to convince herself) at her friend, who really did seem less inclined to die now than he had a few moments ago. It really was a wonder he didn't have a heart condition or a nervous disorder or something after all these years spent hanging around her. "He's just being a-an over-dramatic baby."
She frowned at the muttered oath he threw in her direction, but decided to ignore it. There were more interesting things for her to focus on right now... And what he'd just suggested she do was impossible anyway.
So, instead, she flipped herself upright and stared thoughtfully at the stranger for a moment. Huh. He was kind of cute, for a human, though she'd never seen eyes like that before; the closest she could think of were Vesper's, and his were more sunny than gold...
Something the stranger had said prodded her on the shoulder suddenly, breaking through her thoughts.
"Wait, what? Demons?" She stared at him in confusion, "We don't know anything about any demo--"
"I did." Raising his head, Vesper glared at her, scowling almost bitterly, "Your hearing might suck, but mine doesn't..."
"Well excuse me, but not everyone has freaking umbrellas for ears!"

A wave of tension bled out of the boy. "Oh, good," he sighed, lowering his hands and slouching in relief. "I'm glad he's alright...BOTH of you; man, I thought I was gonna be the one with the heart attack when you almost fell off the roof!" He smiled apologetically, but when his attempt at humor elicited no reaction from his audience, he sunk, his shoulders slouching more.
"Well...yeah," the teenager confirmed, "that's who that was. The two men, anyway; the girl was a human. I may not have as good of ears as you," he nodded towards Vesper with an approving, impressed look, "but my sense of smell is pretty sharp."
The boy leaned to the side, golden eyes scanning the cone of streelamp light below them. The trio had vanished. He blew out another sigh, lightly fluttering golden bangs.
"Looks like they're gone now," he said, "and you can talk above a whisper." He let out a half-chuckle.
"By the way...my name is Will." He took a step towards the bat, sure-footed as a dancer even on the rooftop, and extended a hand. "Need any help?"

"Huh?" Sure enough, the street below had been deserted, with only a single cat prowling beneath the glowing streetlights to break the stillness. "... Oh. Ah well, it was to be expected, I suppose." A little guiltily, the hedgehog made a mark in the gravel with her shoe and gave a lop-sided smile. "It was none of our business anyway..."
"Your business. It was none of your business." Glyph shot him a glare, but Vesper just grunted, lifting his head weakly to eye the hand. His eyes roved from it to its owner for several seconds before wary gratitude overrode his customary suspicion and he accepted it.
"Thanks," the bat mumbled once he'd caught his footing, ears coloring and gently flicking down. He really hadn't meant to start like that, but what could he do? He'd always been a wimp... And, he noted with a jolt, he was still holding Will's hand.
Flighty as always, the bat let go as if the boy's touch had scalded, only to pale and stammer out an apology, tripping over his words worse than he had his feet. Before he could fall too far, a firm hand suddenly clamped down over his mouth, silencing the babble.
"Oh, don't mind him." The hedgehog began conversationally, mischief spreading from behind her tinted glasses, "That's just Vesper for 'hello, nice to meet you, thanks for helping me up...'" The bat's muzzle colored, but out of anger or embarrassment she couldn't tell. Once he'd reined in his mouth, Glyph relocated her hand to his head and proceeded to ruffle his fur into a tangled mess. He growled and ducked away from the attempted noogie, but she just laughed and smiled back at Will.
"Glyph, and fluffy here--" she nodded at the gloom cloud hovering next to her, "--is Vesper. And, uh..." If the hedgehog had wanted to look anymore sheepish, should would have had to grow wool, "we don't usually... hang out on r-rooftops... or spy on people..."
