Another strangled noise. "Took her nearly an hour to stoppit....dunno how she managed to make it far enough to b-be a Gym Leader ifshesgonna cry al'a time when she l-loses...." All the noises coming out of Gold's throat seemed strained, even the sniffle and following faux-childish laugh. "And you f-f-forgot Gym Leaders to stubborn to a-a-admit they c-could lose to a small t-town k-k-ki-kid....Stupid C-Clair..."

"Don't even get me started on Clair--" Silver fell silent abruptly as they passed in front of an opening between two buildings. There it was, rising out of the near skyline--the Goldenrod Radio Tower.
He glared at its silhouette from the corner of his eye, gritting his teeth into something that might have become a snarl... if he hadn't suddenly become aware of the dull throb at his shoulder. Wordlessly, face falling blank, Silver reached to loosen his collar and take some pressure off of the old, remembered injury.
The boy was silent for just a few beats longer than a pause should have merited before picking up as if nothing had happened, staring straight ahead, appearing as annoyed as he had been before the delay. "--thought she was something just because her family owned some dank, old, Magikarp-infested cave." A snort. "Please."

Gold had been too busy letting out a whimper at the Radio Tower and burrowing closer to Silver to notice the pause. As far as he knew, his redheaded friend hadn't stopped talking at all. A faint semblance of a nervous smile flickered on his lips. "Y-y-you'd make a better Gym L-Leader than her...all her pokemon w-w-were more f-f-for show than anything i-i-i-if you a-ask m-m-m-me..."
He still wasn't looking up.

Silver had to pause at that. A part of him--the competitive, obsessive, darkly determined voice in his head--wanted to agree, eagerly. It was the side that had carried him for four years, across two regions, the side that had kept him alive... and also the side that had caused him no end of trouble.
Softer came the wary, uneasy, quietly angry reminder of his family history... and immediately the first drew back to brood.
"Pass. Too much trouble." Silver shrugged without missing a beat, keeping his eyes trained ahead. "Besides, then the only time Clair'd get to play dress up would be on Halloween. She'd throw a fit."

Gold's gigglefit was slightly less strained than the first few. The nervous smile spread to simply being slightly timid, and his grip loosened slightly.
He still wasn't looking up.

"You know it's true." Silver went on smoothly, "That whole family dresses like they belong in a circus."
It was almost like the good old days, before their lives had been shot to hell--breaking into the department store for no reason at all, bad-mouthing bratty Gym Leaders with his best friend...
Almost.

But Gold wasn't thinking of lazy days where they did nothing at all but snipe at eachother. He wasn't thinking of childish dreams that were to be shattered, listless songs that didn't mean a thing in the long run, accomplishments that turned into nothing but air, or innocence that would would be raped and replaced by an eerily false copy.
At the moment, he was tripping after giggling too much to pay attention and attempting not to take himself and Silver down into a faceplant. Somehow- possibly what little bit of luck he had running true to form- he managed not to, whining an unhappy, sulky, accusing noise and clinging to the redhead a bit more.
He still wasn't looking up.

Silver floundered--or as close to floundering as the sure-footed redhead ever came--and stopped short, throwing out his free arm in the vain hope that it might do something to stop both of them from eating concrete.
When they'd stabilized, Silver snapped a glance at Gold.
"H-hey, don't whine at me. It's not my fault you're a klutz!"
The redhead huffed, readjusting his grip. He had some nerve, thinking he could gripe at him like that after he'd just dragged his sorry butt half-way across the city.
"... anyway, if you wanna blame it on someone, blame it on Clair and that stupid cape."

Gold responded with another whine and snuggled into Silver's side. "Y-y-your fault f-for making me laugh s-so much...."
He STILL. Wasn't looking up.

Silver glanced at the other boy, his voice carefully smooth, despite the fact that a part of him wanted very much to twitch away from the contact.
He perked a brow, appearing perfectly serious. "... are you actually implying that I could have a sense of humor?"

Gold's shadowed face lit up in a small smile. "M-m-m-m-maybe." A true giggle warbled out of his throat, shyly, as if laughing would upset some sort of balance.

Silver snorted, narrowing his eyes at Gold from over his nose... which was a difficult feat, considering the other boy had at least two inches on him.
He carried on with the imperious stare, wrinkling his nose as if he were offended. "Glad someone's laughing, because that sounds like a joke to me."

Gold warbled a faint grin onto his face, still giggling ever so shyly and barely tilting his head so a gleaming, flat eye that no smile could reach.
But at least he was looking up.

Silver snorted and shook his head at the look, appearing exasperated, though inside he was relieved... and uneasy. He wasn't panicking anymore, but... it still wasn't Gold. He hadn't been Gold since Before... and it was disheartening to see his best friend in such a state. Gold was always the optimistic one--if anything, Silver should have been the one brooding, not Gold.
Silver had to suppress another sigh as they retraced the steps they'd made earlier in the day, putting Goldenrod at their backs, but he only rolled his eyes at Gold, smirking. "Okay, chuckles, north then west. That's all I know. You're up after that." There wasn't a hint of a threat in his voice--just that same note of slightly exasperated melodrama he'd put into place since he'd started speaking. "Better not get us lost."

Gold's psuedo-smile widened a bit. "I w-wouldn't do that." The reedlike body of his straightened just a tad, looking around to gauge where they were. And still his eyes barely reflected a thing, like darkened windows.
