Silver's lips pressed into a thin line--he'd come to the same conclusion earlier back at the Pokemon Center... but with different intentions in mind. Intentions that, looking at the state Gold was in, he didn't dare speak aloud. It'd only upset the boy more.
"Alright." He said, "Calm down. Violet's the next closest, and Olivine after that." Except that he would really rather not cut through Ecruteak...
"Those morons never set foot in either of those..." Slowly, Silver straightened, looping one arm under Gold's to lever them both up. "They'd have no reason to go there now... okay?"

Everything would have been fine and dandy at that reassurance...except for the fact the redhead inadvertently mentioned the very worst place for Gold and his shattered mind. He froze, eyes flying wide open in horror, breath turning ragged.
"N-n-NO!"
And he was clinging again, this time even more panicked than before.
"N-n-n-not Violet, please, God, anywhere but Violet, nononononononononononononononononono--"

Silver wasn't sure what he'd said, but he regretted it immediately. Eyes widening in alarm, the boy had to sink back the ground just to keep his grip on Gold from slipping. He stared at him, stunned speechless, and then quickly shook his head.
"No, it's okay, it's okay! We don't have to go to Violet." His voice was low, and he struggled to keep it even, firm--it was only years of practice that let him succeed. "Calm down. We don't have to go there. Olivine's not that far away. We'll just cut west from the National Park and follow the coast. Okay?"

Gold hiccuped another sob, nodding violent and clinging to Silver like he'd die otherwise.
"No Violet...no Violet", he murmured brokenly in affirmation, shaking like a leaf in the stronger trainer's arms.

"No, we won't, we won't. Just calm down." Silver breathed a sigh. This had not been in the job description.
"Okay. Okay. Let's try this again." This time, Silver simply tightened his grip and hoisted both of them to their feet, digging in his heels to support the taller boy's weight. Instead of moving, however, Silver just stood there, holding Gold up and carefully gauging his expression. "... okay?"

Shaken brassy orbs slowly made their way to Silver's face. A slow, painful nod was the only response as he forced himself to straighten a bit.

Silver narrowed his eyes, studying him for a moment before he finally nodded back.
"... all right then."
Again Silver shifted, hooking one arm under Gold's and looping the boy's wrist around his neck so that he walk without half-dragging him down the street. "... c'mon."

After his fingers curled back into the shoulder of Silver's jacket, the ex-Champion nodded again. After a few steps, his wobbly walk started seeming indicative of a wounded fawn.
Not once did he look up.

Without another word, Silver tightened his grip and started off down the street, keeping his steps even and slow--much slower than he would have liked, but he wasn't going to take any chances of dropping Gold. Once they were back out in the street, Silver paused to readjust the marker on his mental map, and then was off again, staring resolutely north.
He walked without speaking for a long time, ignoring the curious stares of passerby without so much as a flicker of annoyance appearing in his narrowed eyes. Every so often he'd pause to adjust his route again, steering clear of the Radio Tower, despite his almost overwhelming desire to go get a jump on Team Rocket and beat some heads in.
"... Olivine." He finally glanced at Gold, faintly thoughtful, trying to ignore the little voice in his head that was screaming for bloody vengeance at him. "You're going to have to refresh my memory. I know about the Park short cut, but I've only ever actually used Route 39." Which was a lie, but the silence was starting to become stifling, and Silver had the sinking suspicion that giving Gold the chance to dwell on whatever had upset him wouldn't end well. "Last time was to battle that Steel-type Gym Leader once she came back from being gone for freaking ever..."

"She w's taking care of a sick Ampharos", came a muted, miserable reply, "Made me get the medicine..." Gold barely lifted his head for an instant before dropping it back down and adjusting their course slightly.
"'Atta way..."

Pause. "Yeah. I remember being irritated about that." And using a few choice words... Wonder if they remember me over there at the lighthouse. Guess we'll find out. Wince.
Silver shifted his steps to match Gold's, letting the other boy lead slightly, although he knew exactly where they were going.
"Oh yeah?" He snorted. "Typical. How far out they send you?"

A slow, sluggish pause and a faint lift of the head.
"....Cianwood", the mumble finally came, a little less miserable than the first. "Made me fight the gym leader 'fore I c-could leave...sucked."

"Of course. The crazy backwater town in the middle of nowhere with the miracle pharmacy. Why didn't I think of that?" The redhead rolled his eyes, a bit more dramatically than was necessary, but if it kept Gold distracted...
He paused, narrowing his eyes. He'd only been to Cianwood once--well, technically twice, but that didn't count--and it took him a moment to recall the name of the Gym Leader. "... Oh, you mean that nutcase sitting under the waterfall?" Silver snorted, waving his hand, appearing bored. "Pffft. Tried to take my head off when I challenged him."

Gold had to let a small giggle out, however strangled it sounded. "Juggled a boulder around when I did....wife had to come in to make 'im stoppit...."

"... That's just embarrassing." Was that a laugh? He hoped so. Humor and cheer-ups weren't really Silver's thing, but he couldn't just let him keep brooding. Gold brooding was unnatural; he was always so... well, perhaps not always happy in present days, but at least optimistic. Silver snorted again, sounding disgruntled. "What is it with all these Gym Leaders and their issues?"
Something in him twinged at his own words, but he didn't let it show. It was an old wound, ancient even. It couldn't matter anymore. "Sick Pokemon, idiotic training rituals..." He let his voice drop to a grumble, huffing in the general direction of the Goldenrod Gym. "Oh, and spoiled hissy fits. Can't forget those."
