Snowflakes fell, fast and thick, swirling past his ears and gently tugging knots into his fur. He wasn’t cold, though. How could he be, while everything was burning around him, bathed in his glorious flame? How could he be, when this fire in his blood warmed him, chased away the cold before it had a chance to even touch him? How could he be, when the smoking inferno in his eyes was enough to blast each and every one of these snowflakes into smoldering cinders?
No, the way he trembled wasn’t caused by the snowstorm, or the by fact that it was the dead of winter. He was too powerful to even be slightly bothered by the pathetic efforts the elements were making to deter him.
It was the anticipation, the thrill of the hunt. Lava bubbled at his very core, fueled by an overwhelming, never-ending supply of adrenaline.
Of all the lives he’d thrown away, of all the vermin he’d crushed, there was one who’d escaped his trap. One little mouse had been smarter than all the rest. One crafty, sneaky, little rat had known how to disappear when the cat had come to town.
But this particular rat had just run out of places to hide, and now…
Now all that there was left to do was crush it.
Slowly, painfully slowly, a smile that more than matched the January weather furled across Vesper’s face.
